Visitors to Kaslo are amazed by the variety of wildlife in the area. Deer, bear, coyotes, wild turkeys and even the odd moose can often be seen as you drive along the highways. Here are a few tips on making sure that wildlife encounters are safe:
Always reduce your speed in areas where wildlife caution signs are posted. These signs are placed in areas where there has been a high incidence of sightings, and unfortunately, collisions.
Enlist the help of a passenger to scan the sides of the road ahead. If you see wildlife, be prepared to stop. All animals are unpredictable, and stopping is better than swerving. Remember, if you see one animal, chances are that there are others and they’re travelling together – check to make sure.
By keeping these things in mind, you can safely enjoy the abundance of Kootenay wildlife.
